The UEFA Women's Champions League season for Chelsea Women began on Thursday night with an amazing 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, earning the team general manager Paul Green's praise for a "wonderful start."
The Blues earned all three points on the opening day of play thanks to Millie Bright's first-half volley. This victory serves as a springboard for the rest of our European run, which begins next Wednesday at Kingsmeadow against Vllaznia.
Bright scored the game-winning goal on minute 27 after skillfully volleying the ball home from Erin Cuthbert's cross. Chelsea had the better chances throughout the game. We defended our slim lead with tenacity and astute game management to secure a crucial three points.
Green acknowledged his happiness with the performance against a quality opposition and praised the players for their dedication and commitment to getting the desired result after observing a strong overall performance.
"Defeating a tough opponent like PSG away from home gives us great delight, and maintaining a perfect record is fantastic. Tonight, I think the players really dug in. Our dominance in the first half, in my opinion, was followed by some pressure in the second. I thought we handled it well; we appeared to have a strong defensive line; and getting a clean sheet bodes well for the remainder of the season."
Green told the players at halftime that, on another day, the score could have been higher if we had taken more advantage of the opportunities we were creating. The team still had a slim lead at the break.
"To continue the conversation with Denise, I repeated myself. In the first half, in my opinion, we played really aggressively and won the ball back with good intensity. We simply urged them to continue doing so until the second half. We were aware that we might face pressure because it's an obviously difficult location and a hostile crowd."
"In the second half, we had two or three excellent counterattacking possibilities of our own that, if we had made a better pass or finish, may have expanded our lead. I felt like we limited their options. Ultimately, we're happy that we were able to win away from home."
Bright, the goal scorer, received special recognition from Green, who praised the defender for her defensive efforts as well as the striker's goal, which was the deciding factor in the French capital.
"I thought she was really good tonight. It was a great finish. While we were both playing at Doncaster together, she used to be a striker. When it was sent to her at the back post, she must have been thinking back to that occasion, but it was a great finish.
She did a fairly good job overall as a member of the defensive unit. She is a top player, and tonight, she gave a fantastic performance.
Green believes this performance can inspire optimism for the next games after a brilliant start to the group phase, but he was quick to emphasize the necessity for consistency as we aim to go further in the competition.
"It proves, in my opinion, that we are capable of carrying out our tasks well wherever we are. A 1-0 victory over PSG away from home is a terrific result for us. We'll feel more confident heading into the remaining stages of the campaign, and perhaps some of the ghosts from the previous year will start to die. At the end of the day, we need to demonstrate that the entire group can count on us."
"This is a great start, but we must maintain it throughout the remaining games and make sure we score the necessary number of points to advance the team. We came up just short in the championship game the previous season, and perhaps conceding goals at home contributed to our eventual elimination."
"That was a very difficult group, just like it is now, but we are off to a wonderful start tonight, and we must strive to build on it. We are clear about our desire to compete at the highest level."
